  • 1. A 12-year-old Boy Ran Away to Bali After Fighting with His Mom

  • After a fight with his mother, a 12-year-old boy stole her credit cards to cool off - in Bali. After a couple unsuccessful attempts, he bought a flight without parental consent, boarded the plane and entered Indonesia by telling officials his mother was waiting for him outside the airport. In Bali, the boy booked a hotel room, rented a motorbike and ordered a beer. He spent four days enjoying the wonders of Bali before the police identified his location through a social media post.

  • Something to chew on the next time you and your son go toe-to-toe...

  • Sure, it would be nice to relax on a beach to cool off after a fight but that doesn't always (read: ever) happen. So, better idea: nip those fights in the bud. While not every battle can be avoided, parenting expert Debbie Pincus recommends three tools for shutting down fights with kids:

  • 1. Work on yourself first Choose to be the best version of yourself, even when your kid is acting abhorrently. You can't control how he responds in tense situations, but you can control your own reactions.

  • 2. Stay out of your kid's way If there isn't a health or safety risk to contend with, let your children have the opportunity to make their own mistakes.

  • 3. Be on his team Remember your kid isn't the enemy. You're working together to help him build his best life.

  • 2. E. Coli Outbreaks from Romaine Remain a Mystery

  • The CDC issued a new warning after eight new cases of E. coli emerged last week: Don't eat any form of romaine lettuce if you don't know where it came from or if it's from Yuma, Arizona. This strain of E. coli is particularly serious, and can live in the lettuce even after it's washed. Although none of the 60 affected have died, 31 were hospitalized and five developed kidney failure.

  • Something to chew on when your kid is helping you cook dinner...

  • Harmful E. coli can live in a variety of environments and it's sometimes hard to remember what all the rules are. (If I forgot to put my chicken salad sandwich in the fridge, can I still eat it or do I need to skip lunch?) But there's no better way to teach your kids safe cooking than cooking together.

  • And if you're wondering what types of food your little one can cook with you, try these age appropriate recipes (with ideas on how to let your kid help):

  • 3-6 year olds: Easy strawberry ice cream, or practice colors and patterns by making Rainbow Fruit Skewers

  • 5-7 year olds: Homemade Spaghetti and Meatballs

  • 6-9 year old: Salmon with Brown Sugar Glaze

  • Tweens: Honey Garlic Chicken and Vegetables
