Top 12 tips for protecting the environment when you travel

How to go green when you travel.
  • Traveling is a thrill! Experiencing historic landmarks, fantastic cultures and diverse food can give you the break you need.

  • Too bad mother earth takes a hit ... or does she?

  • Going green on your vacation may take more planning (and possibly more time), but if it helps the environment, then maybe it is worth it.

  • Especially for you granola-eating tree huggers, here are 12 tips to go green while you travel.

  • Start with the basics:

  • 1. Bring reusable water bottles and shopping bags

  • Carry reusable items in a suitcase for when you make stops and need to fill up.

  • 2. Pack light

  • Keeping the van, plane or whatever form of transportation you are using light will emit less gas into the atmosphere, allowing for much cleaner air.

  • 3. Unplug before you leave

  • Unless there are still roommates or people visiting your home, unplug the electronics in your house. This will cut down your electricity bill. (Turn down the thermostat as well.)

  • When planning for transportation:

  • 4. Buses first

  • Carpooling is the way to go! If you are able to ride a bus around town and observe the sights along the way, do it! Less gas = happy you.

  • 5. Planes are efficient

  • When traveling alone, refrain from driving. There is no need to emit more gas than is already in the air, plus flights are cheaper than you may think if you buy early!

  • 6. Rent a hybrid

  • If rent a car, chose a small vehicle or hybrid.

  • 7. Plant a garden

  • If you feel bad about putting filth into the air on vacation, consider planting a tree or garden. We need oxygen to survive and trees produce that for us humans.

  • When you arrive:

  • 8. Choose a clean hotel

  • Visit the hotel's website and check out their recycling programs, work to reduce energy consumption and how their facilities are maintained.

  • 9. Reuse hotel products

  • Not from the dirty person who stayed there before you, but if you are staying in a hotel for a couple nights, insist on using the same sheets and towels instead of having them washed every day.

  • 10. Bed hop

  • Instead of staying in a hotel, find family or friends in the area you can stay with. There are apps and websites that connect vacationers with locals who have open rooms. This conserves a ton of energy. Same goes with driving around town. Ever heard of Uber?

  • 11. Shopping from local vendors

  • Buying products from local vendors is a great way to support the local economy and get your hands on authentic products.

  • 12. Eating

  • Reach for the organic ingredients first. Just about everywhere you go has organically grown food. It is better for your body and the environment.

  • You may be doing some of these things already - which is fantastic - but watch what happens when you implement them all into your trip. What a new, exotic and Instagram worthy trip you will have to share with your friends and family!
