Do these stories restore your faith in the world?
  • True stories are the best stories, and the most inspirational ones. There's nothing wrong with fictional stories, but there's always something special about real stories of bravery and perseverance. Hollywood has started to take notice of that. Here are a few favorites.

  • 1. "The Cokeville Miracle"

  • On May 19, 1986, a former marshal and his wife walked into Wyoming's Cokeville Elementary School with guns and a bomb. What followed was a two-and-a-half-hour standoff that ended with the bomb accidentally being triggered.

  • The only fatalities, however, were those of the perpetrators. Though students and teachers were injured, none was injured fatally. Cokeville Miracle tells the incredible story of the incident and what the children said they saw protecting them.

  • 2. "Schindler's List"

  • Possibly one of the best biographical films of all time, "Schindler's List" tells the story of German business owner Oskar Schindler and his attempts to save Jewish lives during the height of the Holocaust by enlisting them to work at his factory. It's a story of light in the dark and how the human condition can not only survive the worst conditions, but still learn to show kindness as well.

  • 3. "Freedom Writers"

  • Freedom Writers tells the story of first-time teacher Erin Gruwell, who found herself in a low-income school torn apart by gangs and race-based violence. Though they wouldn't even give her enough money to buy books for her students, she refused to find herself deterred and worked extra hard not only to understand her students, but to teach her students how to tell their stories as well.

  • 4. "Pursuit of Happyness"

  • In the early 1980s, future CEO Chris Gardner found himself homeless and alone with a young son. Despite carrying several heavy burdens involving the lack of money and the uncertainty of his future, "Pursuit of Happyness" tells how he persevered and worked hard to provide a better future both for himself and his son.

  • 5. "A Beautiful Mind"

  • John Nash was a brilliant mathematician and winner of the Nobel Laureate in Economics. He's also schizophrenic, a condition that he has been struggling with for many years. "A Beautiful Mind" tells the story of the condition's effect on his relationships with friends and family, and ultimately the way he incredibly overcame it.

  • 6. "The Blind Side"

  • The Blind Side is a film about Michael Oher's struggle with poverty before being adopted by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. It's a story that tells about the power of faith and finding where you belong, as well as how family doesn't just end with blood.

  • 7. "Selma"

  • "Selma" tells the story of the historical march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama, in the height of the civil rights movement to demand voting rights. It was a difficult period of history, and that feeling is transported onto the screen, as the producers accurately and honestly portray the struggles that the group faced as it fought for rights. But that just means that when it does succeed, it's all the sweeter.

  • Whether you're a sucker for movies based on true events or not, these films have won the hearts of many worldwide. So if you haven't seen them, make some time this summer and enjoy the ride.
