Why staying in the hospital is so awesome

Even though she spends much of her time in a hospital room, Claire Wineland is able to find the positive.

When things in life aren’t going well, the tendency is to become negative or bitter. What if we were able to see the positive side of our trials instead?

Claire Wineland chooses to be positive, even though she spends a lot of time in a hospital. She’s 17, spunky and vibrant. And she has cystic fibrosis — a disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. She has created a series of YouTube videos to talk about her situation and life in general and help others to understand it.

While she spends up to four hours a day undergoing treatments, Wineland has chosen to see the positive. In her video, “Perks of Going to the Hospital,” she points out the great things about staying in a hospital. Some she mentions are:

  • Room service.

  • The nurse call button for any help you might need.

  • Riding wheelchairs down the hallway.

  • Vending machine snacks.

  • Cable and Wi-Fi services.

  • Bed sheets get changed every few days.

  • You don’t have to look presentable — clothes, make-up, etc.

  • “Blab” to your nurses and they have to listen.

  • They do your laundry for you.

  • Lots of reading time.

  • The connections you make with the nurses and other patients.

Who can argue with that? Not having to cook or clean up after yourself sounds like a pretty nice vacation, right?

Even amid health problems, personal struggles or heart-wrenching trials, we can still keep a positive attitude and be grateful for what we do have. Your problems won’t necessarily go away because of your positive attitude, but it will make them more bearable.
