Parents know that kids can be picky eaters. So, what would happen if you placed these picky palates in a fancy restaurant? You’re about to find out.
Six second graders from Brooklyn, NY were invited to dine at the French restaurant, Daniel, one of the fanciest restaurants in New York City. Lead Chef and the namesake for the restaurant, Daniel Boulud, took the kids through a flavor tour.
These were not only fancy dishes the kids got to sample, but all new flavors for these young taste buds. According to a NY Times article, Boulud’s goal was “for the children to really discover a lot of flavor, a lot of layers, a lot of texture.”
The diverse menu included Maine Lobster Salad, Smoked Paprika Cured Hamachi with Ossetra Caviar, Crispy Japanese Snapper and dessert titled “Fraises et Coquelicots and Velours D’Abricot.”
The reactions to the new dishes varied. The children discussed what each item looked like. Some liked the food while others did not. Each child seemed to at least like one menu item though some may be hungry afterward. One girl remarked, “It tastes like soap. Why am I eating soap right now?”
Regardless, they all seemed to have a good time being dressed up and going to such an elite dining place. At the end, they each also received a chef’s hat.
Getting children to try new foods can be difficult. As parents, we can try to make it fun and an enjoyable experience, even if they don’t initially like the new food. Consider taking one night a week or a month to try something new. You can even have your kids put on their best clothes and pretend they’re at an expensive restaurant.
