One of the most satisfying rewards of being a parent is building a relationship with your child that will last a lifetime. If you want to make your relationship with your child stronger than ever, then here are some habits you’ll need to work on. Strengthening your relationship with your child will make being a parent even more rewarding.
1. Be Consistent
It can be hard to build a relationship with someone if you feel as if you can’t rely on them. The same goes for your children. In order to strengthen your relationship with your child, you’ll want to be consistent. Let your child know that you’ll always be there for them, regardless of what they do. Also, avoid letting your child down by making promises you cannot or do not intend to keep.
This habit will give your children the security they need to go to you when they need help and to trust you above all else.
2. Spend Quality Time Together
Spending quality time together is a great way to strengthen your relationship with your child. It doesn’t matter where you go during your quality time together, as long as you and your child are talking about your lives and sharing some things going on. Try to make your quality time special, doing something new or unusual together.
Remember to turn off technology when you interact with your child. Children may feel less important than your phone so its a good idea to just put it down and connect while you are fully present.
3. Let Your Child Contribute
As a parent, you’re supposed to be the one that your children run to when something goes wrong. You give them advice and help them work through the problem. Although there is nothing wrong with being there for your children, don’t be afraid to reverse the roles. As your children get older, discuss some of your decisions with them, giving them the opportunity to help you come up with solutions to small problems or situations. You’ll need to keep these discussions appropriate for children, allowing them to help without placing a burden on them, but by letting your child contribute to your life, you’ll build a stronger relationship.
4. Remember to Play
Children learn through play and by getting down to their level and taking the time to get in touch with your inner child you will have a better understanding of their world. Play games that force both of you to use your imagination and really enjoy yourself! The bonus here is that playing and laughter help to release hormones that make both of you feel happier.
5. Listen with your Whole Body
Adults have this ability to listen with their ears and nothing else. Kids pick up on that, just like they pick up on your annoyance at their constant talking. Listen and allow them to finish what they are saying and avoid the urge to interrupt or correct them. Instead, ask questions and really engage in a meaningful conversation with your child.
6. Show your Child Respect
Often as parents we find ourselves demanding respect from our children and yet we never actually model the same respect for them. Try to avoid taking frustrations out on your child, or expressing your irritability with them. Be sure to always mind your manners around your child so they know you respect them.
7. Cuddle Often
This might be more difficult with teens but often the best way to connect with a child is through touch. Hug often and with younger children set aside time to enjoy an extended bed time cuddling together and reading books.
Building a stronger relationship with your children is important. A stronger relationship will help them feel more comfortable coming to you with their problems, no matter how old they get.
