We’ve heard of the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It teaches us about self-mastery, teamwork, communication and personal growth. We’re always looking for ways to improve ourselves and do better at life. Major change doesn’t come overnight, but it can come with simple, baby steps. Here are seven more habits you can develop to be more successful (and happy) in life:
1. They forgive
They know that holding grudges not only prevents them from staying positive, they know that dwelling in the past is a weight that will slow them down and keep them from getting where they want to be. They forgive so that they can move forward with ease and focus on what really matters.
2. They refuse to let envy control them
Envy is the ruling emotion for people with low-self esteem. It makes you compare yourself with others, wishing you were more like them. Successful people roll with what they’ve got and make the most of their situation. They know their worth and can focus on their own success rather than the competition.
3. They are unafraid of failure
Successful people have failed a lot. But they understand that failure is a great lesson and a stepping stone toward greater things. They know they wouldn’t be where they are now if it weren’t for what they learned through their failures, so they can look forward to the future without fearing what failure will do to them.
4. They are organized
An organized desk equals an organized mind. Their calendar is laid out, their rooms are clean and their desk space is clear. Clutter makes it harder to focus, and successful people know how to stay focused.
5. They have an attitude of gratitude
They recognize all the elements that came together to help get them where they are now. They know they wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for other people and hard work. That gratitude has helped them to be happier and more conscious of the work it takes to be successful.
6. They take time to be still
Sometimes life can get crazy, and successful people know exactly how to tune it all out. They can take a moment to themselves to re-energize. When they know how to mentally separate themselves from the world, they are more calm and ready to tackle anything.
7. They smile
There’s some truth to the phrase “fake it ’til you make it.” Smiling can actually trick your brain into being happy. Similarly, frowning and pouting can have the reverse effect. Successful people make the conscious effort to be happy, and with that comes a spirit of optimism. Optimistic people are kinder to others and they laugh more often, and those kind of people do more and work harder.
